The Fallschirmjägergewehr 42 (FG42) was an automatic rifle produced in Nazi Germany during World War II. The weapon was developed specifically for the use by paratroopers, as a suitable gun after their experiences in the invasion of Crete. As a result, the FG42 was developed. It could fire single shots semi-automatically, but also serve as a light support weapon
Designated "FALLSCHIRMJAEGER GEWEHR" 1942 (paratroop rifle, model of 1942), this weapon was designed by the Rheinmetall Company. The paratroops operated under the aegis of the Luftwaffe (air force), rather than the German Army. They required an assault rifle that was no more than 36 inches long and weighed approximately the same as the K98 Mauser bolt-action rifle. Hitler is said to have favored this weapon over the late MP-44 7.92mm Kurz assault rifle because the FG-42 utlitized the standard, full power rifle cartridge. Only 2,000 of this first model FG-42 were produced.
