Do 335 Pfeil History: The Dornier Do 335 Pfeil (“Arrow”) was a Geman World War II heavy fighter built by Dornier Flugzeugwerke. It was one of the small group of aircraft that marked the pinnacle of international piston-engined development. Its performance exceeded those of other twin-engine designs due to its unique “push-pull” configuration. The Pfeil was the fastest piston-engined fighter ever built, reaching 846 km per hour in level flight at a time when the official world speed record was 755 km per hour. The Luftwaffe, or German Air Force, wanted to put the aircraft to squadron use, but only a handful were delivered before the war ended due to delays in engine deliveries. The unconventional layout of the Do 335, with one engine “pulling” in the nose and another “pushing” in the tail, was patented by Claudius Dornier in 1937. This configuration provided the power of two engines but with reduced drag and better maneuverability. Unlike normal twin-engined aircraft, with wing-mounted engines, loss of an engine on the Do 335 did not cause a handling problem. They described its performance as exceptional, particularly in acceleration and turning radius. It was very docile in flight and had no dangerous spin characteristics. Because of its appearance, pilots nicknamed the aircraft the “Ameisenbär” (“anteater”). In May 1942, Dornier submitted the P.231 design in response to a requirement for a single seat high speed bomber/intruder. It beat out rival designs and a development contract was awarded as the Do 335. On May 23, 1944, Hitler ordered maximum priority to be given to Do 335 production. Ten preproduction aircraft were produced at Dornier's Oberpfaffenhofen plant between July and October 1944. By then the Allied bombing campaign was delaying arrivals of engines, propellers, radios and structural subcomponents. This greatly affected production, as the Do 335 was not a simple aircraft. Installation of the electronics alone took 60 hours of assembly, and the electrical parts list was 112 pages long. Although several preproduction aircraft were issued to combat conversion units about ten months before the war ended, not one Do 335 actually entered combat.
